When I first moved to Bozeman twenty-some years ago, I was initially taken aback by how many underemployed people I met who had master’s degrees and PhDs. These were extra educated, world traveled, well read, sophisticated folks who had chosen to make their home in this Montana meets Mayberry backwater. In that early adopter era, living here was much more likely to be a real sacrifice—career for quality of life, money for soul.
Well, here we are more than two decades later, and Bozeman doesn’t feel quite as undiscovered. Seriously, how many times can your town end up on a grooviest places to live, best ski town in North America, top 10 places to hook a trout, raise a family, you-get-the-idea list? Let’s just say all this national and international media attention has spurred some relocation curiosity.
